Former President Joe Biden is receiving radiation therapy, an aide told POLITICO on Saturday, as he continues to stare down a disease that shaped much of his political career and public life.

“As part of a treatment plan for prostate cancer, President Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy and hormone treatment,” Kelly Scully, the former president’s spokesperson, told POLITICO in a statement.

The former president and his family have worked to project a positive image around his illness, telling a longtime friend, former Rep. Bob Brady, in May that “everything looks good” and that they have a plan for his treatment. At the time, his office reported that the cancer “appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management.”

Biden devoted significant energy toward curbing cancer — which took the life of his son Beau in 2015 — during his storied political career. While in the White House, he championed the Cancer Moonshot initiative, which aimed to cut the cancer death rate in half by 2047.

Biden announced his diagnosis, aggressive prostate cancer, with metastasis to the bone, in May, triggering an outpouring of public, bipartisan support from even the likes of President Donald Trump and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).

“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis,” Trump, who clashed with Biden on the campaign trail throughout the 2024 election, wrote on Truth Social. “We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”
